Portland Slag Cement

Slag cement is permitted to be produced by BIS under IS 455: 2015 either by intergrinding mixture of Portland cement clinker or granulated slag with addition of gypsum or by blending uniformly and intimately with addition of ground gypsum, if required.
Pyramid Slag Cement is produced by uniformly and intimately blending of high quality ordinary Portland cement produced by the company and finely ground granulated slag in high efficiency mixers.

The ground granulated slag with glass content in excess of 90% is sourced from Electrotherm India ltd and ground in its split grounding unit in ball mill to achieve optimum particle size distribution (PSD) for better workability and superior durability.

Advantages of Pyramid Slag Cement:

  • Low water demand and better workability.
  • Superior cohesivity and place ability due to optimised PSD.
  • High compressive strength at early and later periods.
  • Resistance against chloride ion penetration and diffusion resulting in high degree of protection against corrosion of steel reinforcement.
  • Lower heat of hydration helps in minimising micro-cracks in interior mass of concrete.
  • High integrity of concrete due to none or least development of cracks.
  • Provides high resistance to concrete against sulphate, chloride and acid attack.
  • Very high long term durability of concrete.
  • Environment friendly and green product with least carbon foot prints.
  • Economical compared to other similar binding materials.

Applications of Pyramid Slag Cement:

  • All Civil Engineering construction works of general nature in buildings and services.
  • Underground works in foundation, basements, etc where soil or water may be contaminated by organic matter and acidic effluent.
  • Water retaining and storage structure like overhead, underground water tanks, dams, aqueducts, etc
  • Marine and coastal structure where chlorides and sulphates are present
  • Industrial plants especially food processing, sugar, distilleries, refineries and chemical units.
  • Mass concrete works like piles and pile caps, raft foundations, retaining walls, bridge piers/ abutments etc,
  • Concrete roads, bridges, culverts and other transportation infrastructure.
  • Sewage and water treatment plants, drainage and sewerage and water harvesting works.
  • High Performance Concrete (HPC) for high strength, dense microstructure and impermeability.

Chemical Characteristics of Pyramid Slag Cement

Sr.No. Characteristics Pyramid Slag Cement Requirement as Per IS 455:2015
1 Magnesia (% by mass) 4.93 10.0 (max)
2 Insoluble Residue (%by mass) 0.91 10.0 (max)
3 Sulphuric Anhydride, SO3 (%by mass) 2.00 10.0 (max)
4 Sulphide Sulphur, (S) 0.59 1.5 (max)
5 Loss on ignition (% by mass) 1.06 5.0 (max)
6 Chloride content (% by mass) 0.005 0.1 (max)

The chemical characteristics of Pyramid Slag Cement are also far superior to the requirements of IS 455:2015. Extremely low chloride content in cement will help to protect steel from corrosion and enhance the durability of concrete.

Very low values of Insoluble Residue and loss on Ignition indicates purity, freshness and consistency of cement. Similarly low values of sulphuric anhydride and sulphide sulphur helps better workability and slump retention in fresh concrete and protection against sulphate attack in hardened concrete.

The unique physical and chemical characteristics of Pyramid Slag Cement imparts better cohesivity, workability and place ability to fresh concrete and superior compressive strength and durability to the hardened concrete.
